The Morrigan by Toyoll The Morrigan by Toyoll
Ooooo, a water colour piece? How risqué!

Anywhoooo,

The Morrigan! No, no, not that anime twat, the real, celtic Morrigan! Look! I even covered her in traditional blue war paint and gave her a braided gold collar!!!!

She is a part of a trinity of mother goddesses, including Badb and Macha, and is said to appear as an old hag, washing bloody clothes at a river, or as a striking young woman, completely naked, with the exception of war paint. She can also transform into a crow, raven, horse or wolf to watch over the battlefield and decide the fates of the warriors.

She is the deity of war, death, sexual potency, wealth and a slew of other fields. The celts were big into the generalist thing.

Morrigan even tried to seduce the hero Cuchulain, but became his implacable foe when he rejected her. WEEEE!~

Those tattoos remind me of Kida's from Atlantis.

Morrigan sounds like a really nice lady, fun to travel with, a great sparring partner, and lots of laughs to around.(FYI, I was being sarcastic, if not obvious enough).

Heheh, well, just hope she doesn't appear as the Woman at the Ford. Might not turn out so great for ya!

Well, I love the Darkstalkers character but am also interested in obscure mythologies. I find the Celtic Morrigan to be a fascinating character and will write a book about her someday. One of the things that interests me is how she's the goddess of both death and sex.

Anyway, this is some lovely artwork. I love how the perspective makes her seem so bold and proud. And how she is both sexy and frightening, which is fitting and probably my favorite default mode for a female character.

i love how the hair morphs into the raven and the shadow to the wolf. i think this is a beautiful dipiction, he face looks cheeky and a little whimsical - i love that- i have only one gripe.. and i spose i understand why you painted it that way and can forgive i spose as a shape shifter she can be whatever she pleases.... but as she is my patron goddess and as a redhead... i dont know why you painted her with black hair when she is so known for her wild red locks
love the painting = you are a great artist

Patron goddess, huh? Well, I meant no disrespect, it is purely an artistic rendition. Darker hair made for a much more sinister, earthier atmosphere, as well as a much more natural flow between her hair and the raven, much less jarring. I suppose you could chalk up the colour difference to the fact that her hair is in mid transformation, but I digress. Thanks so much for the feedback and I'm truly glad you enjoyed this piece!

True

Also aside from the anime Morrigan there is a character in the video game Dragon Age named Morrigan who seems to be a more accurate interpretation of her, she shape shifts, is a witch, is usually half naked, seems rather promiscuous, and seems to revel in bloodshed

I'm just a bit of an armchair mythologist, so I find all of this stuff totally fascinating.

Thanks! Perspective is a hassle, but well worth the effect. I'm glad you liked my piece so much, I figured that, as a trinity goddess, she should be shown in three forms.

Ah, DEFINITELY glad to see a Morrigan piece (as far as I can tell, the Celtic pantheon is rarely drawn these days,) and that it's so good simply adds to it (of course, I've never seen a piece by you that I WASN'T impressed by, but still.)

Tell me if my presence troubles you, since I'd hate to seem like THAT guy just because I liked your art.

Indeed it is the Morrigan in all her celtic glory!~ And no need to worry, I always love to hear from my watchers! ^^

It is unfortunate that the celtic deities aren't more present in this particular art community, but if you like this piece, I'm working on a mock character design set featuring the lovely Morrigan and the hero Cu Chulainn.
